Finally!! I have a new pantry and laundry room!

Our new pantry and mud room/laundry room has been completed - almost!

First, before I begin I must say I love our home and I'm so proud to call it our home. However, the people that built it didn't make the best choices with the layout in certain areas. My biggest complaints are the kitchen layout and what was our pantry and laundry closet. We've lived here for almost 4 years and we are finally starting the process of fixing these things that annoyed me constantly. Ok, maybe it wasn't (isn't) that bad but there are times it feels like it! ha!

Our original pantry was the size of a linen closet and it was ALWAYS a mess. You could never find anything in there because we just had stuff shoved in there. There were small appliances, chips, water bottles, paper towels, canned goods (8 cans of cream of mushroom soup????) and more. At one point I did have a picture of the mess but I ~~purposely~~ accidentally deleted it. You will just have to take my word that it was a wreck!

So after begging my husband to start the demo and after reading and drooling over Decor Chick's pantry the work began!!! I totally would have done this myself but since taking on this project involved running electrical wire and going under the house to redo the plumbing I had to wait on him. Because this gal doesn't mess with electric and there is no way I'm crawling under our house! I don't care how bad I want a project completed! ;)

I plan to have a couple other posts on how certain details were done to make the pantry and the mud room/laundry room complete. It would just be too long to have it all in one post.

But in the meantime, here are some pics of the before, during and after ;)

The original pantry door is on the left and the door on the right leads out to the mud room.

This a shot of the mud room before demo began. The stairs lead to the FROG (finished room over garage) which is the guest room/play room. The door to the garage isn't shown but it is right by the stairs. The wall on the left of the picture is where the pantry was and the black shelf you see should have been a desk. It basically was a catch all and A LOT of wasted space.

Here is a pic of the pantry after the shelves are up and I'm in the middle of painting. Ok....Before you say anything....I KNOW I should have painted the walls and shelves BEFORE everything was nailed into the walls. It wasn't until after they were up and 8 hours later that I had that moment of clarity! More on that later ;)

This was the previous mud room which is now our laundry room/mud room. As you can see it's not painted yet in the pics. My husband has painted the walls where our washer and dryer are. I'll share those pictures in another post soon.

This is where the black shelf was previously in the mud room and now our dryer sits there :) In this pic you can see the door that leads out to our garage by the stairs.

Sorry all the pictures are so dark. There is no natural light and dealing with florescent lighting doesn't make for a pretty picture :( But we are working on that! I have a new light to install - well, actually my husband will. Remember, I don't do electrical!

So this is just the beginning of our work in progress. I will be back with more posts with our paint colors, new doors and decorations. I won't promise this will be done in a week but at least this gives me motivation to get to work! ;)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

I hope you had a great one with family and friends!! Me and the kids spent a very quiet New Year's Eve. Everyone was asleep by 9pm! If my husband had been here we may have gone to the neighbor's but since he deployed a couple of days ago we just stayed close to home. Not complaining at all and I was very happy to be warm and cozy in my bed! Great way to start the year!!!

It's been months since I have posted. It was so long that I came back and checked my blog and realized that my background had disappeared. Who knows how long it's been gone - OOPS!

Life has been busy but so much fun over the last couple of months. We (I use this word very loosely) have been busy with remodeling, redecorating and redoing around the house. I will share all ~~I have done~~ we have done over the last couple of months soon. And I have many more ideas to share for upcoming projects.

The main focus of my blog last year was to share money saving deals, great coupons and more. I plan to continue to share great deals I find but I also have other great ideas for this blog. I plan on creating a section for home decorating/remodeling, recipes and more. Wish me luck with this one and I hope you have fun with me in my adventures in decorating!

My plan for the rest of the day is to put away the Christmas decorations. At this very moment what has been put away is just sitting at the top of the stairs in the play room. I think I need to get to work!

Why I am blessed

This video is just one of the many reasons I have been blessed in my life. On July 1st my husband came home early from overseas. I knew he was going to be arriving early, however Jacob didn't. I didn't get the entire welcome on video since the time ran out but you can see by his face he wasn't quite sure what to think of his daddy standing at the door.

And you can hear our dog, Daisy having a fit because he came home :)

I could hardly sleep last night because today is the day my husband is coming home!!!!!!

He has been gone for 2 months and actually wasn't going to be home until the middle of July. But 2 days ago I got a phone call that he would be home today........BEST phone call ever!!!!!!!!!!

We still haven't told Jacob because we want to surprise him. I can't wait to see the look on his face.....he is going to be so shocked!!!

I'm going to try to get some more posts on the blog today....like some great Target deals but forgive me if I don't. I'm getting ready to take a friend to the hospital for a check up and then coming home to get ready for Malcom to drive up in the driveway!!!

This appetizer is a HIT!!

With the 4th of July just around the corner and many cookouts with friends in our future, I'm busy planning menus.

I can't take credit for this recipe (as with most things I cook). My mom makes this and I know she got this recipe from someone else.

I was hesitant to try it because I'm not a big fan of jalapenos.....I really do try to avoid them at all costs. But over this past Christmas when I was home visiting, my mom made them for a party. They smelled wonderful so I thought, what the heck....I'll try them :)

Let me tell you, that for someone that was NOT a fan of jalapenos I couldn't get enough of them. I ate 6! Personally, I would recommend that you not eat that many at one time.

Since then, I've made these for every party that we have had and literally within minutes they are gone!

Here is the recipe:
Jalapeno appetizer (clever name, right?)

Jalapenos - as many as you would like - depending on the size of the party depends on how many I get
Cream cheese
Little smokies (find these where the hotdogs and sausage is located in your grocery store)
Bacon
some toothpicks

**I wear gloves when cutting and seeding the jalapenos and assembling everything***

- cut the jalepenos in half lengthwise and remove seeds and ribs
- spread cream cheese in each side of jalepeno
- place one little smokey on top of cream cheese
- wrap bacon slice (I usually cut in in half so it's not so long) around jalapeno and secure with toothpick
- place them on a baking sheet
- bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. I start out at 20 minutes and sometimes have to go longer....I just wait until the bacon is crispy.

Take out and enjoy!!!

I don't have pics of this so I hope my explanation is good enough. I'm making these again for the 4th and I'll be sure to take some pictures.

A day at the zoo

It was a last minute decsion to take the kids to the zoo this day. I thought since the public schools had not let out for the summer it would be perfect.

It wasn't going to be HOT!!

It wasn't going to be crowded!!!

Well, I thought wrong! It was HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I swore I listened to the weather and they said low humidity and comfortable temps. Perfect! That is until I got there - wearing JEANS!! And it was miserable hot and humid at 9am!!!!!!! I'll rant about my dislike about meterologist at times later. For now, this is about the zoo. Oh....and the crowds too!

We got there early but that isn't surpising since I get everywhere early and if I'm not early...something is wrong. Anyway.....as I mentioned it was a perfect day to get to the zoo because public schools are still in session so there is NO WAY there are going to be a lot of kids there. Right? Wrong!

There are just a few people in line to buy tickets and I'm so proud of myself for choosing this day despite the heat. Then I turned around and see a school bus. Hmmm.....that is weird. Why would there be a school bus here at the zoo when there is one week left of school left??? No big deal.....it's just one. And then no sooner than I had that thought another one comes and then another and another. Oh NO!!!!!!!!!!! Before we even bought our tickets I counted 12 school buses in line to drop off very excited, very hyper kids.

Now, don't get me wrong....I love kids. I really do. I have 2 of my own and if I wasn't so tired, so old and had money I would probably have more. However, I'll be honest that I'm not thrilled being in a location with 12 bus loads full of crazy, sick of school elementary kids. Even one of the chaperons that I ended up talking with wasn't thrilled either.

We were able to be one of the first to get our tickets and like a mad woman I took off with the kids in the OPPOSITE direction of the crazy, sick of school elementary kids. And at the end of it all we had a fantastic time!!!

I didn't get as many pictures as I wanted to get because I was busy.

- Busy keeping a 1 year old happy because she was so hot.
- Busy keeping Jacob happy because the baboons with the rainbow butts (long story for another time) were no where to be found
- Busy trying to stay ahead of the 12 bus loads full of crazy, sick of school elementary kids
- And busy just having a great time with my 2 great kids!! :)

- How to learn wind direction by sticking your finger in your mouth and then holding it up in the air. No big deal....everyone needs to know this right? However, I don't need to know this at 7am while attempting to shave my legs in the shower. I'm wondering what in the world he was dreaming about to make him think about this so early in the a.m.

- That he was going to buy me the most beautiful necklace in the world and that I needed to go to Old Navy to buy it. Who knew that Old Navy had these beautiful necklaces. I was thinking Tiffany's but he has other plans :)

And at 11:34am he attempted to teach me how to make inappropriate bathroom noises on his arm???!!!???

I had to draw the line there. Boys can be gross sometimes!

Now, let's see what the rest of the day will bring.....wish me luck!

I would have to say July. The 4th is always so much fun and my son's bday is this month. And another bonus...my husband is coming home from deployment!!! :)

I really like them all but I prefer to swim in a pool. So unless I can see the bottom of the lake or ocean I'm not getting in it! It creeps me out to think what may or may not be under the water that I can't see.

6. One of my favorite Summer memories is.....?
Hands down......the birth of my son :) When I was younger I would love to just play outside for hours and hours just being kids! Riding bikes, climbing trees, swimming, Popsicles and more....all the things that make summer - summer :)

Yummy pasta dish

I have another recipe to share from The Pioneer Woman......be prepared for more. Just warning ya! ;)

In my attempt to become a better cook and give my family to eat besides Pop Tarts and Hamburger Helper, I am trying different recipes. My husband is over the moon at how well I've gotten.

Several months ago I made this pasta recipe from PW's website. It was delicious!!! Seriously! I was so proud of myself to have made a pasta dish that didn't involve boiling some noodles and dumping some sauce from a can on top!

It was easy as pie and the best part is that all of it was eaten! Not just by me and Malcom but the oldest kiddo asked for more!!

I have made this a few times and sometimes I will use wine....other times I won't. It just depends on if I drank it or not. Ha!

Garage sale finds

I love garage sales. Or yard sales. Whatever you want to call them. Besides looking for kids clothes, I really don't have anything in particular that I'm looking for. When I see it, I will know. And if it's a good deal, I'll get it. But I'm not paying over 50 cents for an item of clothing and what I pay for household stuff really depends on what it is and if the condition is really good.

So while my sister was here over Memorial Day weekend I found a yard sale on the side of the road and had to stop. I was really shocked when I found these planters:

For $3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't believe I could get these so cheap!! I've been wanting planters for the longest time to sit on each side of my front door. I was SO excited to find these!

But I knew I had to do something to them because this terra cotta color just isn't going to cut it on my front porch. Or really anywhere in my house.

So, I had to take advice from one of my favorite decorators The Thrifty Decor Chick and get some spray paint! I ended up purchasing some spray paint for plastic and went to town. I put two coats on each one and also spray painted the inside. I didn't spray paint all of the inside of the planter because no one is going to see it after I put some dirt and plants in there. Plus, my fingers and hands were hurting from spray painting so much. What is that about????

So here is the final outcome:

It's just a small and simple change but it works for me and exactly what I wanted. Obviously, I haven't put anything in them yet. I'm not sure what to put in there. Some flowers? Topiary? Just a green plant? Any ideas?

**I'll update this once I figure out what in the world I'm going to put in these :)

Hip2Save and Totally Target have listed some great deals at Target for this week!

Unfortunately for my husband, Target is one of my all time favorite stores so I'm always looking for the best deals there. I figured that if I spend as much time and money that I do there each week, I should at least save as much money as I can there.

There are times I run into issues with some cashiers when trying to stack coupons (using a manufacturer and store coupon). This is why I always try to have their coupon policy with me so if there are any questions I can show the cashier. Sometimes, they just might not be aware of what they can and can't do (although they should be trained on this). You can find their coupon policy here and you can print it out.

Be sure to check out Hip2Save and Totally Target for lots of great deals! But of course, keep checking back here.....I'll post some of my favorites :)

Just about the one I love!

If you don't want to hear sappy love then you can just skip this post. I have to have a post just about my handsome husband. I didn't plan on posting about him but instead I was going to talk about MTV or Kate plus 8......this won out! I miss him today. I miss him everyday. But tonight, there was something different about me missing him......not sure what it is but it's a little more than usual.

We have a long history.....somewhat complicated but it's good. Our life is good. I will tell our story another time but for now, I just needed a post about him.

Here we on our first night out after I had Jacob. This was in Louisiana. We moved there - to his hometown. This is a long, complicated story that at the end of the day brought us closer. I may talk about it one day. For now, it's where my husband was born and raised and just a stepping stone to where we are now.

My husband loves to have fun.....loves to be with friends and family.

Wild crazy night. Our 2nd crawfish boil. No other comments needed ;) But I will say my husband is a great cook and everyone loves his crawfish!

He loves me. He takes care of me. And (literally) would go to the ends of the world to take care of us.

He is also a thinker. When something is on his mind, he will analyze it over and over. There was a time I thought this was a fault.....I've grown and learned that it's not. It's a great characteristic of a man who wants to be sure that what he is doing and plans he is making will be best for his family.

This is where he thinks.....

He is teaching our son about it too.....

He also thinks in the woods when he is hunting. Being a woman that really doesn't want to go out hunting with him and I know he really doesn't want me to, I don't have a pic of him in a tree stand. He does thinking out there too.

He loves his dog. All good men love dogs - right? This dog, Tig is a pain in my rear but he is a good dog that loves his family and protects us all.

He loves us. His family. I know we are everything to him and all he does is for us.....me, his little boy and his baby girl.

don't they look alike? It amazes me everyday!

His baby girl looks up to him and adores him.....

He survives kids field trips :)

And he is trying to turn our baby girl into a country girl. He may succeed at this but if mommy has anything to do with it I will still make sure she is girly girl!

There is so much more about this man that I could say about him. His hard work and determination, his stubbornness, rough around the edges, a great cook, a handy man, , passionate, smart and more. Oh.....and this too....

She is walking!!

Today my 13 month old finally started walking!

She has been cruising the furniture for awhile now and will walk if we are holding her hands. But, today is the day she did it all by herself!!

Addison was just sitting in the floor and stood up without holding onto anything and took 6 steps! I was literally jumping up and down because I was so excited!

But in typical Addison fashion.....I have the camera on stand by and now she refuses to walk. LOL That's ok....I'll get it on film sooner or later and share the video on here.

I'm so excited she has reached this milestone and just a little bummed that she is growing up!

I don't subscribe to the Sunday paper to receive coupons because I have found that purchasing the paper from Dollar Tree was more cost effective for me. There are some weeks that our paper won't have coupons in them and as with all areas we don't always receive the same as others around the country.
