BIG day!!!!

I could hardly sleep last night because today is the day my husband is coming home!!!!!!

He has been gone for 2 months and actually wasn't going to be home until the middle of July.  But 2 days ago I got a phone call that he would be home today........BEST phone call ever!!!!!!!!!!

We still haven't told Jacob because we want to surprise him.  I can't wait to see the look on his face.....he is going to be so shocked!!! 

I'm going to try to get some more posts on the blog today....like some great Target deals but forgive me if I don't.  I'm getting ready to take a friend to the hospital for a check up and then coming home to get ready for Malcom to drive up in the driveway!!!

This appetizer is a HIT!!

With the 4th of July just around the corner and many cookouts with friends in our future, I'm busy planning menus. 

I can't take credit for this recipe (as with most things I cook).  My mom makes this and I know she got this recipe from someone else. 

I was hesitant to try it because I'm not a big fan of jalapenos.....I really do try to avoid them at all costs.  But over this past Christmas when I was home visiting, my mom made them for a party.  They smelled wonderful so I thought, what the heck....I'll try them :)

Let me tell you, that for someone that was NOT a fan of jalapenos I couldn't get enough of them.  I ate 6!  Personally, I would recommend that you not eat that many at one time. 

Since then, I've made these for every party that we have had and literally within minutes they are gone! 

Here is the recipe:
Jalapeno appetizer (clever name, right?) 

Jalapenos - as many as you would like - depending on the size of the party depends on how many I get
Cream cheese
Little smokies (find these where the hotdogs and sausage is located in your grocery store)
Bacon
some toothpicks

**I wear gloves when cutting and seeding the jalapenos and assembling everything***

- cut the jalepenos in half lengthwise and remove seeds and ribs
- spread cream cheese in each side of jalepeno
- place one little smokey on top of cream cheese
- wrap bacon slice (I usually cut in in half so it's not so long) around jalapeno and  secure with toothpick
- place them on a baking sheet
- bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes.  I start out at 20 minutes and sometimes have to go longer....I just wait until the bacon is crispy. 

Take out and enjoy!!! 

I don't have pics of this so I hope my explanation is good enough.  I'm making these again for the 4th and I'll be sure to take some pictures.

A day at the zoo

It was a last minute decsion to take the kids to the zoo this day.  I thought since the public schools had not let out for the summer it would be perfect. 

It wasn't going to be HOT!!

It wasn't going to be crowded!!!

Well, I thought wrong!  It was HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I swore I listened to the weather and they said low humidity and comfortable temps.  Perfect!  That is until I got there - wearing JEANS!!  And it was miserable hot and humid at 9am!!!!!!!  I'll rant about my dislike about meterologist at times later.  For now, this is about the zoo.  Oh....and the crowds too!

We got there early but that isn't surpising since I get everywhere early and if I'm  not early...something is wrong.  Anyway.....as I mentioned it was a perfect day to get to the zoo because public schools are still in session so there is NO WAY there are going to be a lot of kids there.  Right?  Wrong!

There are just a few people in line to buy tickets and I'm so proud of myself for choosing this day despite the heat.  Then I turned around and see a school bus.  Hmmm.....that is weird.  Why would there be a school bus here at the zoo when there is one week left of school left???  No big deal.....it's just one.  And then no sooner than I had that thought another one comes and then another and another.  Oh NO!!!!!!!!!!!  Before we even bought our tickets I counted 12 school buses in line to drop off very excited, very hyper kids. 

Now, don't get me wrong....I love kids.  I really do.  I have 2 of my own and if I wasn't so tired, so old and had money I would probably have more.  However, I'll be honest that I'm not thrilled being in a location with 12 bus loads full of crazy, sick of school elementary kids.  Even one of the chaperons that I ended up talking with wasn't thrilled either. 

We were able to be one of the first to get our tickets and like a mad woman I took off with the kids in the OPPOSITE direction of the crazy, sick of school elementary kids.  And at the end of it all we had a fantastic time!!!

I didn't get as many pictures as I wanted to get because I was busy. 

- Busy keeping a 1 year old happy because she was so hot. 
- Busy keeping Jacob happy because the baboons with the rainbow butts (long story for another time) were no where to be found
- Busy trying to stay ahead of the 12 bus loads full of crazy, sick of school elementary kids
- And busy just having a great time with my 2 great kids!!  :)

And of course him -  my husband!  The best dad my two kiddos could ever ask for!

and so far this is what I have learned from my son:

- How to learn wind direction by sticking your finger in your mouth and then holding it up in the air. No big deal....everyone needs to know this right?  However, I don't need to know this at 7am while attempting to shave my legs in the shower.  I'm wondering what in the world he was dreaming about to make him think about this so early in the a.m.

- That he was going to buy me the most beautiful necklace in the world and that I needed to go to Old Navy to buy it.  Who knew that Old Navy had these beautiful necklaces.  I was thinking Tiffany's but he has other plans :)

And at 11:34am he attempted to teach me how to make inappropriate bathroom noises on his arm???!!!???

I had to draw the line there.  Boys can be gross sometimes! 

Now, let's see what the rest of the day will bring.....wish me luck!

I would have to say July.  The 4th is always so much fun and my son's bday is this month.  And another bonus...my husband is coming home from deployment!!!  :)

I really like them all but I prefer to swim in a pool.  So unless I can see the bottom of the lake or ocean I'm not getting in it!  It creeps me out to think what may or may not be under the water that I can't see. 

6. One of my favorite Summer memories is.....?
Hands down......the birth of my son :)  When I was younger I would love to just play outside for hours and hours just being kids!  Riding bikes, climbing trees, swimming, Popsicles and more....all the things that make summer  - summer :)

7. What's your favorite secret bargain?
I can't think of a favorite secret bargain but I always score some awesome deals at Target! 

8. Do you plan on or have you been watching the World Cup?

I really didn't even know what the World Cup was until this week so that would be a no.  LOL

In my attempt to become a better cook and give my family to eat besides Pop Tarts and Hamburger Helper, I am trying different recipes.  My husband is over the moon at how well I've gotten.

Several months ago I made this pasta recipe from PW's website.   It was delicious!!!  Seriously!  I was so proud of myself to have made a pasta dish that didn't involve boiling some noodles and dumping some sauce from a can on top! 

It was easy as pie and the best part is that all of it was eaten!  Not just by me and Malcom but the oldest kiddo asked for more!!

I have made this a few times and sometimes I will use wine....other times I won't.  It just depends on if I drank it or not.  Ha!

Garage sale finds

I love garage sales.  Or yard sales.  Whatever you want to call them.  Besides looking for kids clothes, I really don't have anything in particular that I'm looking for.  When I see it, I will know.  And if it's a good deal, I'll get it.  But I'm not paying over 50 cents for an item of clothing and what I pay for household stuff really depends on what it is and if the condition is really good.

So while my sister was here over Memorial Day weekend I found a yard sale on the side of the road and had to stop.  I was really shocked when I found these planters:

For $3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I couldn't believe I could get these so cheap!!  I've been wanting planters for the longest time to sit on each side of my front door.  I was SO excited to find these!

But I knew I had to do something to them because this terra cotta color just isn't going to cut it on my front porch.  Or really anywhere in my house. 

So, I had to take advice from one of my favorite decorators The Thrifty Decor Chick and get some spray paint!  I ended up purchasing some spray paint for plastic and went to town.  I put two coats on each one and also spray painted the inside.  I didn't spray paint all of the inside of the planter because no one is going to see it after I put some dirt and plants in there.  Plus, my fingers and hands were hurting from spray painting so much.  What is that about????

So here is the final outcome:

It's just a small and simple change but it works for me and exactly what I wanted.  Obviously, I haven't put anything in them yet.  I'm not sure what to put in there.  Some flowers?  Topiary?  Just a green plant?  Any ideas?
